Economic and Labour Market Review – January 2008

The Economic & Labour Market Review (ELMR), published by the Office of National Statistics (ONS), draws together expert research and analysis to build an up-to-date, comprehensive and unique statistical picture of the UK economy and labour market.

ELMR includes impartial commentary and analysis from its specialist ONS authors, illustrated with tables, charts and diagrams. It provides an independent, cohesive view of the state of the economy and the labour market, and gives an insight into how the statistics behind the analysis are produced and interpreted.

Highlights from the January 2008 edition include:

• Developments in measuring the UK service industries, 1990 to 2006

Reviews recent developments in the measurement and publication of service sector statistics and considers where improvements are still needed

• The Occupational Pension Schemes Survey 2006

Presents findings on the number of schemes, their membership and contributions to schemes by employers and employees

• Multi-factor productivity: estimates for 1997 to 2006

Presents the above using an experimental quality-adjusted labour input measure and experimental estimates of capital services growth as inputs

• Labour Force Survey: interim reweighting 2007

Outlines the reasons for making revisions and the impact of new population figures on headline labour market indicators
