New light on adult literacy and numeracy in Scotland: evidence from the 2004 survey of the 1970 British Cohort Study

This research provides insights into the social, educational and economic factors associated with the acquisition of effective literacy and numeracy, and the consequences for those who have not yet mastered literacy and numeracy to the level demanded by modern day life. It investigates self-reported reading, writing and number difficulties, assesses literacy and numeracy skills in Scotland, and looks at the impact of early life experiences. It also reviews early education performance and the school environment, and post-16 education and learning experiences. The report explores working life and economic disadvantage, community participation, and family life and well-being. Finally, it confirms the level of disadvantage revealed by differences between low literacy and numeracy skill groups and others.

Multi-factor productivity: estimates for 1997 to 2006

This article from the Office of National Statistics presents multi-factor productivity (sometimes referred to as total factor productivity growth or growth accounting), using an experimental quality-adjusted labour input measure and experimental estimates of capital services growth as inputs. It provides analysis for the whole economy, some broad industry groupings, and, for the first time, the market sector. The article seeks to better understand the UK's productivity performance over the period and to use the results as a diagnostic check on the consistency of output and input data.
