Futureskills Scotland Industry Profile: Accommodation in the Highlands and Islands 2006

Accommodation and Catering

The sector includes hotels, bed and breakfast businesses, motels, hostels, camping sites, holiday villages, self-catering accommodation, restaurants, take-away food shops, bars, clubs, canteens and catering businesses. It does not include sporting and recreational activities. Some key facts from the profiles are:

  • There are 19,600 jobs in the accommodation and catering sector in the Highlands and Islands, worth £520 million
  • The sector has above average incidence of seasonal, part-time and female staff
  • Wages in the Accommodation and Catering sector for Scotland are below the Scottish average for all sectors.
