Futureskills Scotland Industry Profile: Construction in the Highlands and Islands 2006

Construction

The construction sector includes civil engineering works for roads, bridges, airfields and water projects; and schools, house and commercial building work. It includes the main trades of plumbing, joinery, brickwork, electrical work and plastering. Some key facts from the profiles are:

  • There are 17,900 jobs in the construction sector in the Highlands and Islands, worth £1.1 billion
  • Most jobs in the construction sector are full-time and held my males
  • Skill shortages and skill gaps are above the Highlands and Islands average
