Futureskills Scotland industry Profile: Food and Drink in the Highlands and Islands 2006

Food and Drink

Food and drink is a key component of the manufacturing sector in the Highlands and Islands. It includes all food manufacturing and processing activities. The production of all alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks is included, including mineral water, malting for the whisky industry and distilling. Some key facts from the profiles are:

  • There are 7,300 jobs in the financial services sector in the Highlands and Islands, worth £900 million
  • Whisky accounts for more than 20% of UK food and drink export by value
  • The sector has above average proportion of male and full-time jobs
