Futureskills Scotland industry Profile: Land Based Industrries in the Highlands and Islands 2006

Futureskills Scotland has published labour market profiles for 12 different industries in the Highlands and Islands. These profiles provide a brief overview of key industries that are of relevance to the Highlands and Islands. The profiles cover a range of labour market information including:

  • data from Futureskills Scotland's Employer Skills Survey 
  • industry prospects and
  • signposts to other relevant research and organisations

Land based industries

Land based industries include farming, crafting, forestry, horticulture, hunting, shooting and animal husbandry services, excluding veterinary activities. Some key facts from the profiles are:

  • There are 27,000 jobs in the land based industries in the Highlands and Islands, worth £390 million
  • The sector has an ageing workforce with fewer young recruits to farming
  • Wages in land based industries are below the average for all industries in Scotland
