Futureskills Scotland industry Profile: Wholesale and Retail in the Highlands and Islands 2006

Wholesale and Retail

The wholesale and retail sector includes the wholesaling of food and household goods; agricultural inputs; machinery, and intermediate inputs to industry. It includes all aspects of the retail trade expect in motor vehicles. It excludes the repair of personal and household goods. Some key facts from the profiles are:

  • There are 26,100 jobs in the wholesale and retail sector in the Highlands and Islands, worth £2.4 billion
  • The number of jobs in the sector has declined in recent years, but the value of the industry has remained stable
  • Above average females and part-time working in the sector
