In recent years, Futureskills Scotland has commissioned research from experts across the UK to provide informed and objective analysis of key labour market issues. This research sheds light on key issues for Scottish policy makers. It also provides a stimulus for wider debate. Collating this work into a formal research series will help in bringing the issues and discussion to a wider audience. Futureskills Scotland is committed to disseminating and promoting this research series as widely as possible. The views expressed in this research series are not necessarily those of Futureskills Scotland.

The research uses results from the Work Skills in Britain Survey.

This is a UK-wide survey which gathers workers’ views on the skills they use at work. It provides evidence on the skills and qualifications required to get and do jobs, the use of computing and other generic skills, the extent of job autonomy given to employees and workers' experiences and attitudes towards training and learning at work.

The research used data from the 2004 and 2006 Employer Skills Survey to look at the relationship between trade union representation and investment in skills. It focused on recruitment difficulties, skills gaps and training provision. To do this, the use of robust statistical techniques was required.
